The Invention of the Compact Disc was invented by James Russell in the late 1960s. Sony launched the first commercial CD player in 1982. That year it sold for $1000. CDs would cost around $17 to $19 for each one. The Compact Disc reached peak popularity in the mid 80s with the release of the Discman by Sony in 1984. It started out with only 20 albums available then over the next few years took off to reach new heights. The downfall came with the release of MP3 players and Ipods in the late 90s early 2000s. Now CDs are a rare sight. Everyone listens to music on their phones with apps like Spotify, Pandora, or Apple Music. Though some people feel CDs might come back as a vintage trend like records and cassettes have through stores like Urban Outfitters.
