Total Information Awareness

Total Information Awareness

Week 13 Blog
Total Information Awareness also known as Terrorism Information Awareness,
was a mass surveillance program created in January 2003.
It was managed by the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
It consisted of a massive counter-terrorism database with advanced methods for data collection,
processing and analysis. The way it worked to gather information caught the attention of privacy
rights organisations. This included American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) who was concerned
about it gathering personal information. Congressional Negotiators decided to end the program
in September 2003. Though it is of extreme importance to protect the country from terrorism but
as citizens some feel their rights to privacy are violated from these programs. As a country, we
must weigh the importance of both sides, see the good and bad of both. No one wants to have a
terrorist attack, but will they be willing to give up their privacy to help prevent any more from
happening. Though Total Information Awareness was cancelled they used the same technology on
programs that came after. Does not matter how many programs end the government will always
find a way to access personal information.
